Thomas M. Kessler studied medicine at the universities in Fribourg, Lausanne, and Bern leading to MD graduation in 2000 at the University of Bern. He underwent further education as a surgeon in Sursee and Zofingen. In 2003, after having completed basic surgical education, he switched to the Department of Urology, University of Bern (Inselspital), where he underwent speciality training under Prof. Urs E. Studer and obtained a specialist title as an urologist in 2007. Thomas M. Kessler specialized in Neuro-Urology at the University Hospital of Innsbruck under Prof. Helmut Madersbacher (2004) and at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, University College London, under Prof. Clare J. Fowler (2008). In addition to his clinical activities, Thomas M. Kessler also worked as a research fellow at the Horten Center for practice-oriented research and knowledge transfer at the University Hospital Zürich from 2007 to 2009. In 2010, he became the head of the Department of Neuro-Urology at Balgrist University Hospital. Thomas M. Kessler received the venia docendi (Ass. Prof., PD) from the University of Bern in 2010, the venia legendi (Ass. Prof., PD) from the University of Zürich in 2017 and the professorship from the University of Zürich in 2017.
Apart from his work at Balgrist University Hospital and University of Zürich, Thomas M. Kessler is the chairman of the Swiss Continence Foundation (SCF, www.swisscontinencefoundation.ch), the president of the International Neuro-Urology Society (INUS, www.neuro-uro.org), the past-president of the Swiss Society for Sacral Neuromodulation (SSSNM, www.sssnm.ch), and a member of several international and national societies as well as a reviewer of various medical journals.
