Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland, and the main cultural and economic center of the country. Historically part of the canton of Zurich, it is situated at the northern end of Lake Zurich and the River Limmat. Growing from its Roman origins and its development as a medieval market town, Zurich became a focal point of the Swiss Reformation in the 16th century.

The later establishment of the University of Zurich in 1833, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) in 1855, marked it as a center of education and research.

In the 19th century, Zurich evolved into a railway network hub and grew its financial sector, thanks to its banks and stock exchange. Modernization and industrialization reshaped its economy, cementing its status as a banking and finance hotspot. Presently, Zurich is known for its quality of life, innovative spirit, and financial clout, alongside a dynamic cultural scene and historical import, keeping it among the top livable cities globally.
