Elisabeth Farrelly

Umeå University, Sweden

I am a consultant urologist and currently the head of department of urology at Norrlands Universitetssjukhus in Umeå since 2022.

I started my career in urology in Umeå in the 1980´s, then developed in interest in neuro-urology and reconstructive urology. Luckily, I had the opportunity to move to Stockholm and become engaged in the establishment of urology services at the Spinalis SCI unit from 1995 and onwards.

In Stockholm, my training in reconstructive urology took place at the Karolinska hospital. At the same time, I served as a urology consultant to Spinalis, which continued for more than 20 years. This involved holding weekly patient clinics at Spinalis and taking care of workups, invasive treatments and surgery for the Spinalis patients at the Karolinska hospital, and other major hospitals in Stockholm.

During this time, I was engaged in research concerning urological follow-up after spinal cord injury and established the first regional follow-up program. My thesis “The Stockholm Spinal Cord Uro Study”, a cross-sectional study of function and complications of the urinary tract in a regional population of persons with traumatic SCI in the greater Stockholm area, was finally presented in 2021.

Other research areas have been stress urinary incontinence and minimally invasive treatments of various types of incontinence, including botulinumtoxin in non-neurogenic and neurogenic overactive bladder.

In 2020, I was asked to join the urology department in Umeå to support the urodynamics unit and neuro-urology services for northern Sweden.
At present, I hold positions as urology consultant to the neurorehabilitation unit for northern Sweden in Umeå, and the Stockholms sjukhem rehabilitation unit for older persons with SCI in Stockholm and surrounding regions.
